Youth Counselor

Intensive Support Services (ISS) provides mentoring, crisis intervention, individual counseling, and evidenced-based group programs to Marathon County youth and their families. Electronic monitoring and substance testing are also conducted as directed by Marathon County enabling youth to safely remain in the community while working towards their goals and fulfilling their court ordered obligations. The Youth Counselor provides one-on-one, family, and group services to work toward goals and provide support and resources. This position meets with clients primarily in the community, assisting with transportation, as needed.

The Youth Counselor completes a family assessment that identifies areas of needed support and growth opportunities to develop individualized Service Plans. This position provides evidence-based services tailored to meet the needs of the youth and their family including mentoring, family counseling, individual skills building, coordination and/or referral to prosocial activities, and assistance in obtaining employment. The Youth Counselor co-facilitates groups on topics including healthy decision making, life skills, anger management, and gender specific groups. This position connects youth and families to community resources and participates in meetings with school staff, Social Workers, and other providers.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of applicable social service and community service providers in Marathon County preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills in bringing people together to solve problems
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) & web-enabled databases
  • High level of skill in organization, attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Understanding of and experience providing services using person-centered, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma-Informed Care
  • Exercise good judgment
  • Ability to work well with individuals from diverse economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and LGBTQ+ identities

Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services field, Master’s preferred
  • At least two years of experience working with youth in the Mental Health &/or Substance Abuse field, preferred
  • Pass a pre-employment background check
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile with insurance
